Frequently Asked Questions - and Answers

WHAT EXACTLY IS STOREMASTER?

StoreMaster is a modular business management software package, built around the concept that the selling function is the primary activity of the business! When your customers give you money for your products or services, that's the most important thing that happens for your business.

The place where that money is collected is called the POINT OF SALE - and that's true whether you have a walk-in store, or an office, or a telephone or fax machine. StoreMaster's POS module is second to none for retail, wholesale, service, phone sales, mail order, whatever.

StoreMaster captures and logs everything there is to know about each sale and every item on it - the date, time, who bought it, who sold it, who rang it up, how much it cost, how much you sold it for, what the list price was, what the tax was, how it was paid for, where it was shipped... and more...

StoreMaster uses an open data file scheme known as xBASE, derived from the original dBASE file structure. Because of this, StoreMaster can be extended dramatically and easily with both user-defined additions to the data and with your own reports and update screens.

I NEED MORE THAN ONE POS TERMINAL - WILL IT DO THAT?

Yes - it's fully multi-user, network-compatible, and can be used with any NetBios, IPX, SMB, or NetBeui network, such as Microsoft LAN, Novell, Lantastic, Samba, NFS and most others. It can also be used with multi-processing systems such as PCMOS and VM/386.

WHAT KIND OF CASH REGISTER DO I NEED?

You don't. The software turns any PC into a cash register. You can add on any POS hardware you need - select from a wide variety of different cash drawers, receipt printers, customer displays, bar code scanners, credit card readers, change machices, electronic scales, ticket dispensers and more.

WHAT ABOUT UNIX? WILL IT WORK IN UNIX? OR LINUX?

Yes. There is a Linux version available now, on a limited basis. It uses FlagShip as a pre-compiler to C, and the data files are still xBASE compatible. We've added a couple of tools to let you get at the data directly, although Linux has a variety of languages and programs able to read and write these data files (think ODBC), and the xBASE community is working on an Open Source tool called Harbour (Clipper, ship, harbour... get it?) that shows a great deal of promise, and is being developed as a completely platform-independent program. Plus, of course, you can always include a Windows or Mac computer on your network and use any of the software available on those to work with your data, including Word, Excel, Access, FoxPro.

HOW DOES STOREMASTER ADDRESS ACCOUNTING NEEDS?

It can be integrated directly with any Accounting System General Ledger package that accepts import data. We've also introduced our own Small Business Accounting package, with General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll and Purchase Orders.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

You can buy an unlimited single-store license for $1995, which entitles you to run as many registers and office stations as your system can handle, and free upgrades of software perpetually. You can lease it month-to-month for as little as $15 per month, depending on how many registers you have and the term of your lease. That's for the complete package.

And that's only after you decide you really like it. Try it free first - just download it and try it out, ABSOLUTELY FREE!

WAIT A MINUTE! I SAW "FREE" BACK THERE! WHAT'S THE DEAL?

You can download it and evaluate it absolutely free - it costs you nothing but your own time and trouble. If you need help, email us and we'll be happy to assist you in any way we can. If you decide you want it, then you can buy it or lease it. Until then, it's "Unregistered Software".

WILL IT RUN IN WINDOWS?

Yes. It's not "Windows-ware", but it will run in all versions of Windows, from 3.1 to the latest and greatest. We've seen some various odd problems with NT, mainly having to do with printing, file access, and usage of serial ports. Despite the fact that our software is MS-DOS based, and that MS-DOS is a Microsoft product, our friends at MS have somehow managed to miss the point of downward compatibility - lots of MS-DOS software has problems with NT, ME, 2000 and XP, but we have clients running it on all of those.

The ESC key brings up all of the fifty-plus POS functions in a menu format, and after a couple of times, users learn that ESC-3-1 kicks the drawer open, and ESC-1-6 lets you receive payments on your house charges, ESC-1-5 starts the Layaway processor, and so on. I will guarantee you that you can hit three keys a damn sight faster than you can grab the mouse, roll it to a menu selection, click, roll it down to the item you want and click again.

WHAT DO I NEED TO USE IT?

  • A computer with DOS, Windows, or Linux
  • Around 20 MB of free space on the hard disk of your computer

HOW DO I GET IT?

HOT FLASH:
Now you can buy it on EBAY.
Search for "StoreMaster"

  • Download it from our web site
  • ...OR...
  • Order a CD
  • ...OR...
  • Call your local Cash Register or Business Equipment supplier
  • and PLEASE make SURE you follow the installation instructions in the SMINST document.

DO I REALLY NEED ALL OF THE MODULES?

No. You need need the three base modules, and a data file set, to get started. These files will get you the basic POS system:
  • ----Here's the minimum, to get you started----
  • SMINST.EXE Installation instructions
  • SMDS.EXE Startup Data Files Set
  • SMSM.EXE System Manager Module
  • SMPS.EXE Point of Sale Module
  • SMSR.EXE Sales Reports Module

CAN I GET THE SOFTWARE SENT TO ME?

Sure, we'll be happy to do that, as long as you're in the US somewhere. Not free, mind you, but just a nominal charge, $25.00 plus handling and shipping. We used to ship on diskettes, but between the poor quality of even brand-name diskettes and the increasing practice of x-ray scanning by government agencies, it's just too much of a hassle to do that any longer. We ship the software on a CD now. For US Mail, add $4.00; for UPS overnight, add $15.00, for UPS second day, add $10.00;

if you're in Texas, add 8.25% for the Governor (yes, on the shipping, too... sorry, but it's not =our= idea). And, yes, the charge applies toward the purchase.

WHO ARE YOU GUYS, ANYWAY?

SCR Corporation is an author-owned software development company, located in the Alps of Texas. Yes, there are mountains in Texas, and Alpine is a mile high, on the eastern edge of the Great Chihuahuan Desert, in the Big Bend country. We're 75 miles from the nearest traffic light (but only if you go in the right direction- heck, I've driven the 1200 miles to San Diego without seeing a single one 'til I got there), and midway between El Paso and Del Rio (225 miles each way). We moved here from Houston in 1982, to get away from smog, crime, traffic, and crowds. Thanks to the marvels of modern telecommunications, we have customers using our software on every continent except Antarctica.
